| Why would I want to share? If you share a connection you don't have to pay for extra IP addresses from your internet provider. If you are on a dialup and you share you don't have to add more phone lines and pay for more dialup accounts. If we are sharing a connection won't it be slower? If you have a high-speed connection you almost never notice the additional computers because rarely are the computers able to consume the entire speed of your connection. Most of the time on a high speed the data sources are slower than your individual connection due to the heavy load they carry. If you are sharing a dialup you will notice a slowdown if you are downloading files but for web browsing and email the slowdowns should be minimal. Playing PC games over the network? Yes The whole reason that we started doing networking was so that more than one of us could play games online at a time. Hosting PC games over the network? The hardware we install will support the serving of games but will have to be configured to do so. We of course can configure that for you just please let us know during the quoting period so we can be prepared. Where did the name "Network Ranch" come from? When we registered our name the names with "home" and "network" in them were taken so Ranch being similar to home and also have a nice ring to it. I have to give credit for the idea to a friend of mine for it. Thanks for the idea Neil. Does my home need to be pre-wired? NO We can set up a network using other wires that already exist in your home like your phone lines and power lines. If your house is prewired it will probably cost less to set up your home network and it will probably be faster for any large file transfers you do. If I want my house wired for Ethernet can Network Ranch do it? Network Ranch does not offer wire installation in homes. We only use wire that already exists. This is mostly to save us insurance cost and save you money by us not having to spend the time to pull wire through your walls. What are all these words Ethernet, and Cat 5? Please consult the online dictionary provided by the offical Networking Word-list and definitions. If I am building a home right now should we contact you for the wiring? You can contact us and we can provide some limited assistance on what requirements we will have once the house is finished and you want us to set up your network. For any wiring that needs to be put in place you need to contact your builder or contractor. What software does Network Ranch install? We don't install any software. The only thing we might need to install would be device drivers for the networking equipment we might have to add to your computers. How much is this going to cost me? This will cost you around $300 dollars to network two computers to the internet behind a firewall. It could be more if you have needs above and beyond the most standard configuration. What is a firewall, and do I want one in my house? If you have a high speed connection you want a firewall. A firewall is piece of hardware or software (we specialize in hardware firewalls) that shields your computer from computers and people on computers from connecting to your own machine. Why would someone connect to my machine? If someone did manage to connect to your machine they could do various things like take any personal files from your machine or to use you as a shield against the law enforcement agencies. The unscrupulous people of the world need to do this because of the various cyber crimes they are committing. How many computers can I hook to one Cable modem or DSL connection? The equipment we use is limited realistically only by the number of ports available. We can easily provide the ability to connect as many as 24 computers simultaneously. If you have that many computers and they are trying t connect to the internet at the same time a simple DSL or cable modem is probably not going to meet your needs. How much extra will the cable DSL company charge me for doing this? If you use Network Ranch the only thing the cable DSL company will see is one connection just like it was a single computer. Therefore you aren't requiring an extra address from them so they aren't going to charge any differently. |
